Upon entering, the house reveals itself as both formal and free-flowing. This appeal to different modes of inhabitation is seasonal. In winter, a low-lit, dark-clad mudroom transitions to a light-filled interior with framed views of the mountains beyond. The module of these materials informs everything - from the characterful detailing to the proportion and openings of each room. This exacting relationship from part to whole is evidence of a strong collaborative relationship across the project team. These forms are tied together by a lightweight screen system, courtyards and carefully placed openings - creating dynamic interplays of light and shadow within. The outcome is an urban sanctuary amidst Wānaka's dynamic landscape, inviting the next generation to enjoy it into the future. NZIA National Awards Jury Citation: The private house has become a contentious category in architecture as we grapple with issues of sustainability, density and housing security. In response, Roberts Gray has approached this building type with propositions that extend architectural thinking. There is evident speculation about how stubborn vernaculars might be challenged and a suggestion of fresh approaches to materiality, massing, privacy and transparency and balance of built form to landscape. This meticulously detailed and experientially beautiful house reveals impressive technical ability and a finely wrought aesthetic judgement. Importantly, it also demonstrates architectural thinking in this young practice that could lead to a better urbanism. NZIA Southern Awards Jury Citation: A stark blank façade gives no hint of the riches within – a restrained material palette of half-height concrete blocks, Japanese cedar and oak floors with raw galvanised steel. The cedar cladding has undergone yaki-sugi treatment, while the same cedar has been left raw inside. The Timaru Bluestone facade supports local industry and expresses the skills of local craftspeople, while the timber structure and Southland Maple Beech lining sequesters carbon and creates a warm interior atmosphere. The thick walls of galleries and back of house programme create thermally and acoustically isolated environments while high-level clerestory windows draw in controlled natural light. Connection to the outdoors through cross ventilation, glazed circulation and courtyards creates a break from the conditioned galleries, promoting a healthy building with a constant sense of orientation. The diverse range of spaces allow for high levels of operational flexibility to expand the range of art viewing, educational and social experiences at Aigantighe. Architecture and operations combine to create cultural experiences that supports the health and wellbeing of the diverse audiences it serves. The proposed design gives prominence to the original villa roof form, while the verandah that slots underneath provides continuity and contrast through a series of carefully placed additions to suit modern family life. In the absence of a distant horizon, bedroom views are focused inward on special moments created within the site itself.This approach makes the space between and beside bedrooms as important as the rooms themselves. For the site to be accessible at all, a series of bridges would need to be built and so the clubhouse could therefore be considered part of this wider network. The sandstone cladding is quarried on site and treated in a variety of horizontally raked and smooth finishes to emphasize the curving and carved form. One is the endless proliferation of suburban development outward along the ground plane, a feature of Australian settlement patterns from the post-war generation onward. The second is the tendency for high-end residential architecture to be more engaged with the view beyond, than the land on which it sits. Retaining walls draw visitors into a choreographed entry sequence, pulling them through the earth in a series of intermediary spaces. Environmentally, the topography is manipulated so water collection areas align with circulation patterns. These culminate in a series of carefully placed water detention areas, dedicated to purifying water, irrigation, and the prevention of flooding and erosion. Internally, the courtyard form generates a series of volumes that accommodate both intimate spaces of repose and a monumental scale for public assembly. These varied spaces are carefully oriented to the changing level of the topography outside. The intent is to encourage inhabitants to find their way through a site where built-form is occupied like land-form. This relaxed atmosphere extends to the planning where the weather-line shifts back and forth from under the roof edge. A carport replaces the garage, and at the entry a breezeway substitutes for a hallway.
